This artwork consists of three collages. Each measuring 297 x 420mm. They are created by cutting out faces from random magazines and pasting them on to sheets of paper. All magazines are published in Denmark. The idea is to make a popcultural snapshot of the current state of society. I chose to create three collages to emphasize the concept. It is not about the single sheet of artwork. It is about the overall idea.
I wrote down a set of rules to guide this project: 1. Cut out faces from random magazines and paste them on a piece of paper (size variable). 2. The paper shall be totally covered. No white spaces left. 3. No face may be above a certain size in relation to the total paper size. This is to ensure a pattern look. 4. No newspaper cuttings (the paper is bad quality). 6. Both new and old, black and white and color pictures are allowed. 7. Do not distinguish between sex and age. 8. Original context is irrelevant. 9. Photos only. No illustrations, paintings etc. 10. Try to avoid repetitions. 11. Use only magazines from the country where the artwork is created.
I consider this to be a format. A way of creating an alternative portrait of the current state of society and the country it was created in. I would like to recreate this, using the same principles, in other parts of the world. It would be interesting to see the differences and coincidences.
Thanks to Andreas Storgaard Nielsen for helping with the cutting.
